Does China's Growing Security Outreach Matter? Tracing Implications for Irregular Warfare and U.S. Security Cooperation

No 'G2' with China: ex-US ambassador to Beijing

NEW YORK -- Pursuing a Group of Two, or "G2," where the U.S. and China divide the world into spheres of influence and agree not to interfere in the other's area, would be a historic mistake for the United States, former Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns told Nikkei.

Four of the five largest economies in the world are in the Indo-Pacific and as a Pacific nation the future of American foreign policy is with its allies in the region, Burns said.

No 'G2' with China: ex-US ambassador to BeijingWhen asked about U.S. intelligence assessments that China aims to be ready by 2027 to take Taiwan by force, Burns said the U.S. does not believe that 2027 is the set date for an actual invasion. He noted that the Chinese military has not been in a major battle since the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979 and that there has been "turbulence" in the People's Liberation Army over corruption.
