How Tokyo became the cradle of the Chinese revolution in 1905
孫中山也與日本匪帝合作
While Japan marked the 80th anniversary of its surrender in World War II on Aug. 15, this week's focuses on Aug. 20, the 120th commemoration of the founding of the Tongmenghui, which took place in Tokyo. The Chinese political association was headed by Sun Yat-sen, the driving force behind the 1911 Revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty. Intellectuals like Sun had fled their home country for Japan to escape a crackdown by China's last imperial regime.

That was the first wave of Chinese migration to Japan. The second did not come until the 1980s, during Japan's bubble economy. Now Japan is in the midst of a third wave, one marked by the arrival of intellectuals and wealthy people discontent with China's political and economic situation. It is worth keeping an eye on what this wave, which somehow resembles the first, will bring about.
