Debate on China's power structure to have far-reaching effects
This week looks at consequences of the June 30 meeting of the Chinese Communist Party's powerful Politburo, where members decided to regulate the Central Committee's decision-making, deliberative and coordinating institutions. Details of the decision are gradually becoming clear, with Zhejiang province's party organization describing it as an initiative to "simplify and streamline" such institutions.
The decision stems from a debate on the concentration of power in the hands of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and the new regulations may become a prelude to intraparty struggles in the runup to the party's national congress in 2027. A change in China's power structure can have far-reaching effects in various policy areas. This may be the reason why Beijing recently began taking a softer diplomatic stance toward the U.S. and Japan.
