Xi Jinping prioritizes 'regime security' over fighting economic turmoil
The administration of Chinese President Xi Jinping appears to be emphasizing "regime security" over rehabilitating the nation's ailing economy, and this week's China Up Close looks into what's behind this priority.
While the National People's Congress, the annual gathering of China's legislature that began on Wednesday, is on the surface deliberating on how to fight the country's pressing economic problems, leaders are discussing behind the scenes how to keep the power structure centered on Xi.
Judging that China's dire economic situation will not be reversed anytime soon, Xi seems to be focusing on preventing internal or external forces from toppling his leadership -- potentially paving the way for him to secure another term at the party's national congress in 2027.
