Japan doubles defense tie-ups with private sector in drones, AI

TOKYO -- Japan's Ministry of Defense has doubled its joint research projects with the private sector, Nikkei has learned, working with such partners as Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric to hone technologies like drones and AI.
 
The aim is to promote homegrown dual-use technologies that can boost the Japan Self-Defense Forces' deterrence and response capabilities. Businesses also get the benefit of working with the public sector from the research stage, making it easier to gauge demand and potential profits.
