Japan and U.S. hold evacuation drills for islands near Taiwan
TOKYO -- Japanese and U.S. forces are for the first time conducting joint drills simulating the evacuation of residents of Japan's southwestern islands, in an apparent move to ensure the two allies can coordinate quickly and effectively in the event of a conflict around Taiwan.Though the drill is being framed as disaster preparation, a senior officer with Japan's Self-Defense Forces said it could be utilized in a Taiwan contingency as well. An analysis by the U.S. military has suggested that China may attempt to unify Taiwan with the mainland by force within a few years.
