Thai PM Srettha is out. Was this constitutional overreach?
In a striking and contentious decision, Thailand's Constitutional Court on Wednesday ousted Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from his post, citing a serious ethics violation.
Suthichai Yoon argues the ruling raises pressing questions about the role and power of judicial bodies in determining ethical standards for government officials -- and more crucially, whether this decision marks an overreach. Critics were quick to ask: Is this a "constitutional coup" cloaked in the garb of legal propriety?
This decision did not occur in a vacuum. A week earlier, the same court ordered the dissolution of the Move Forward Party, Thailand's largest democratically elected party, on the grounds that the party's activities constituted an attempt to "overthrow the government system."
