Japan to enable fighter jet and missile exports to 12 nations
TOKYO -- Breaking with long-standing policy, Japan plans to allow exports of fighter jets, missiles and other arms to India, Australia, and some European and Southeast Asian countries. The idea is to enhance deterrence against China by cooperating with a dozen nations that have signed individual security agreements with Tokyo.
Japan intends to develop new fighter jets and medium-range anti-aircraft missiles with the U.S. and the U.K. Its sights are set on exporting fighters and new sea-launched interceptor missiles.
Export customers help manufacturers lower production costs, enabling the government to cut its own procurement costs and lighten its financial burden.
