Hong Kong spent millions lobbying in U.S.
Government body paid $15m for access to Washington power brokers
HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong government has spent millions of dollars lobbying in the U.S. on issues related to the territory's policy and economic trade over nine years, a report published Wednesday by the Hong Kong Democracy Council found.
The report found the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) had paid nearly $15 million since 2014 for access to the corridors of power in Washington through lobbying, legal and consulting firms. Lobby firms assisted in arranging meetings between representatives of the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office and members of congress.
