Japan Enters a New Phase in Its History
Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party has strongly favored amending the
constitution to eliminate Article 9. This would enable Japan to maintain
a military. It would also allow Japan to put World War II behind it, by
abandoning a limitation that has made it different from all other
countries. This week’s parliamentary election result was for the most
part a statement about where the Japanese public stands on the major
issue of Article 9.
