Mongolia is almost the only country to have attempted to invade
Japan, except for the U.S. occupation after World War II. The
Mongolia-Korea allied force attacked Japan twice, in 1274 and in 1281.
Back
in the 13th century, China was occupied by Mongolia, so those attacks
effectively represented almost the only times the Japanese have faced
the risk of occupation by the Chinese.
Japan luckily succeeded in repelling the Mongolian invasions, thanks to strong typhoons, or kamikaze
(literally 'God's wind'), but it is obvious that typhoons would not
save Japan if China tried to attack and invade in the 21st century.
It
seems that some American acquaintances try to apply a domino theory to
Beijing's ambitions. They often say, "If Hong Kong falls, the next is
Taiwan, and then Okinawa follows."
