The Other Unexpected Result Of The Recent  Japanese Tsunami

Romantically Yours (Japanese paper sleeve edition) -
Marvin Gaye

Around March 23, 2011 (delayed)

A unique posthumous release from Marvin Gaye – one that focuses mostly on his talents with ballads and standards, and which stands in stark contrast to some of his more sex-heavy work of the 80s! All of the material predates the 1985 release of the record – and some appears to be from Gaye's earlier years at Motown, most likely from unreleased late 60s sessions – which are then mixed here with later sides from Columbia years that round out the set nicely. Production is by a number of different hands in the studio – including Bobby Scott, Hal Davis, Norman Whitfield, and Gaye himself – and each producer takes a slightly different approach to the music. Marvin's self-produced efforts are especially sublime – very mature, adult work that really makes us wonder what he'd have done to soul music had he got to spend some more time on this planet. Other tracks are nice too – and range from more string-heavy standards probably recorded in the 60s, to others that have a sweetly sensual feel – like mellow Marvin of the 70s. Titles include "Just Like", "More", "Why Did I Choose You", "Maria", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Fly Me To The Moon", "Walkin In The Rain", "I Live For You", and "Happy Go Lucky".

The Contras

Irish banks need extra 24bn euros to survive

The Republic of Ireland's banks need an extra 24bn euros (£21.2bn) to survive the financial crisis.

The figure follows a stress test on the Irish banking system by a group of independent experts and the country's central bank.

Four lenders were tested - Allied Irish Banks, Bank of Ireland, Educational Building Society (EBS) and the Irish Life & Permanent.

Allied Irish Banks needs most money, and will have to raise 13.5bn euros.

Bank of Ireland needs 5.2bn euros, EBS 1.5bn euros, and Irish Life 4bn euros.

The total amount poured into the Irish banks since the financial crisis will now be close to 70bn euros.

Professor Patrick Honohan, governor of the central bank, said: "The new requirements are needed to restore market confidence, and ensure banks have enough capital to meet even the markets' darkest estimates."

“The painful consequence is that there is a shortage of capital of £21bn in these banks... That is a colossal sum for them to find.”

Dublin already owns most of Anglo Irish Bank, Allied Irish Banks and the EBS following previous rescues of the banks.

Mr Honohan said it was likely that, as part of the next infusion of funds, the other two banks to avoid nationalisation - Bank of Ireland and Irish Life & Permanent - would now have be taken into state control.

Money set aside from the 85bn euro EU-IMF bail-out agreed in November will be used to fund the latest recapitalisation.

The banks will be set six-monthly - unpublished - targets to reduce their huge borrowings over the next few years through a process of asset sales.

Mr Honohan said, however, that the banks should be able to avoid 'fire sales' that would cut the amount of money raised from disposals.

Marchel Alexandrovich, European financial economist at Jefferies International, said the results of the stress tests were what the financial markets expected.

"Nevertheless, our initial impression is that the question of whether this is enough will continue to linger," he said.

He also pointed that there was no mention of how to treat the banks' senior bondholders, who fear they may forced to incur greater losses on their loans.

Trading in the banks' shares was suspended for the day pending the stress tests announcement.

The European Central Bank (ECB) had been expected to announce a new 60bn euros medium-term financing arrangement, to provide the Irish banks with a reliable source of cash.

Counting the costs

Republic of Ireland's 2010 bail-out:

    * 85bn euros total, of which:

    * 45bn from EU
    * 22bn from IMF
    * 18bn from Irish state pension fund

    * 35bn earmarked for banks
    * 50bn earmarked for budget deficit

Support for Irish banks:

    * 70bn euros recapitalisation, of which:
    * 46bn to date
    * 24bn added after latest stress tests

    * 150bn euros short-term funding, of which:
    * 70bn from Irish central bank
    * 80bn from ECB

But the announcement, which was due at the same time as the Irish central bank announcement, has now been postponed because of a disagreement among the ECB's governing council, according to a report from news agency Reuters.
Mortgage meltdown

Until now, losses in the Irish banking system have stemmed from the collapse of a speculative bubble in the commercial property sector, where billions were borrowed from the banks to fund hotels and shopping malls.

However, the latest stress tests focused instead on an emerging meltdown in the residential sector.

The stress tests assumed a cumulative collapse in property prices of 62% - a level already reached in some parts of the Republic.

It also assumed the unemployment rate peaking at 14.9%, a projection criticised by some economists as too weak, given that the latest data puts the rate at 14.7% already.

However, the Irish central bank hired US asset manager BlackRock to review this year's stress tests to increase their credibility.

A previous round of tests failed to spot serious problems at the banks shortly before some of them required financial support.
Haircuts

The 70bn euros being poured into the banks is equivalent to almost half of the Irish economy's annual output, or about 17,000 euros per Irish citizen - a burden that the government sees as unacceptable.

The newly-elected Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, has been calling for the banks' lenders to share in the losses, but this is likely to be resisted by other European countries.

In the early stages of the banking crisis in 2009, the government issued a blanket guarantee of its banks' debts.
Irish Taoiseach, Enda Kenny Newly-elected Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, wants the banks' lenders to take a share of the losses

The Republic's European partners feared a default by Irish banks could trigger a Europe-wide banking crisis.

They insisted that Dublin continue to honour the guarantee as a condition of last year's bail-out - much to the anger of opposition parties that have now taken control of the government.

However, only about 21bn euros of the banks' remaining long-term debts are still covered by the guarantee, according to the Irish Central Bank.

That leaves some 40bn euros of debts that could potentially be given a "haircut", forcing creditors - including UK, US and German banks - to take losses.

As well as the government guarantee and capital injections, the Irish banks have also been the recipient of over 150bn euros of short-term financing from the Irish central bank and the ECB.

THE CONTOURS: DANCE WITH THE CONTOURS

DANCE WITH THE CONTOURS is an expansion of a planned but never-issued 1964 album by the all-singing, all-shouting, all-dancing sextet. Its original 12 tracks are augmented by a further 14 unissued dancers from the same period, with a couple of slower sides thrown in to give old timers a bit of breathing space. Of the 26 tracks featured, only two of them are previously released.

All tracks are mastered from fresh 2011 transfers of the original Motown ¼ inch tapes (even the two previously issued) and all are presented exactly how you would have heard them almost half a century ago.
With notes by universally-acknowledged Motown expert Keith Hughes, who interviewed Contour Joe Billingslea in January 2011 specifically for the project, wrapped in a booklet featuring a wealth of previously unpublished and rare period photos of the group, this is a package that no collector of early 60s Detroit soul can afford to be without.

Kent is delighted to present the first of several CDs that they'll be issuing under legal license from, and with the full approval of, the owners of the Motown catalogue.
A Critical Look at the Green Energy Economy

First, green energy is diffuse, and it takes a tremendous amount of land and material to harness even a little bit of energy. Jesse Ausubel, director of the Program for the Human Environment and senior research associate at Rockefeller University, calculates, for instance, that the entire state of Connecticut (that is, if Connecticut were as windy as the southeastern Colorado plains) would need to be devoted to wind turbines to power the city of New York.

Second, it is extremely costly. In 2016 President Obama's own Energy Information Administration estimates that onshore wind (the least expensive of these green energies) will be 80% more expensive than combined cycle, gas-fired electricity. And that doesn't account for the costs associated with the hundreds of billions of dollars worth of new transmission systems that would be necessary to get wind and solar energy--which is generally produced far from where consumers happen to live--to ratepayers.

Third, it is unreliable. The wind doesn't always blow and the sun doesn't always shine when the energy is needed. We account for that today by having a lot of coal and natural gas generation on "standby" to fire-up when renewables can't produce. Incidentally, the cost of maintaining this backup generation is likewise never fully accounted for in the cost estimates associated with green energy. But in a world where fossil fuels are a thing of the past, we would be forced--like the peasants of the Dark Age--to rely upon the vagaries of the weather.

Fourth, it is scarce. While wind and sunlight are obviously not scarce, the real estate where those energies are reliably continuous and in economic proximity to ratepayers is scarce.

Finally, once the electricity is produced by the sun or wind, it cannot be stored because battery technology is not currently up to the task. Hence, we must immediately "use it or lose it."
_Forbes

This is rather basic and superficial logic, just scratching the surface layer of problems with big wind and big solar. It is quite easy to dig just a little deeper, exposing more fatal flaws in the "green economy" than even an energy undertaker could appreciate.

Wind turbines are fine and expensive machines. But placing these fine machines out in the elements (even out in the turbulent and corrosive salt seas) is a quick road to machine hell and destruction. Expensive gearboxes tend to breakdown in a matter of years, rather than decades, and blades are prone to develop cracks and fail catastrophically -- endangering anything and anyone within an alarming large radius.

The noise and vibration of these giant turbines in motion makes them unsuitable for installation anywhere near residences. Ice collects on the turbine blades, presenting further hazards. A vast and enormously expensive webbed mass of copper conductors have to be strung or laid to transport this dilute and unreliable energy to more central substations. And in the coldest of weather, you cannot count on wind turbines to keep you warm -- since the wind often stops at just that time of greatest need.

And on it goes. Big solar is even worse than big wind.
