Japan names 33 airports, ports to be upgraded for defense use
TOKYO -- When Japan revised its national security strategy at the end of last year, it talked of upgrading civilian airports and ports to prepare for contingencies. That plan has begun to take shape, with the government looking at the potential military use of 33 airports and ports in 10 prefectures, Nikkei has learned.
The government has begun discussions with prefectures and municipalities that manage the facilities, ranging from Hokkaido in the north to Yonaguni, the westernmost island located 110 km from Taiwan.
Plans include extending runways and expanding docks, enabling the Self-Defense Forces, the Japan Coast Guard and potentially the U.S. military, to utilize the facilities in an emergency.
