Japan, EU to launch security and chip supply chain talks
BRUSSELS -- Leaders of Japan and the European Union agreed Thursday to establish a strategic dialogue to deepen security ties while also bolstering cooperation on semiconductors and other economic issues.
Tokyo and Brussels plan to cooperate not only on maritime security, but also in emerging domains not limited by geography, like cyber and outer space. They will consider exercises between the Self-Defense Forces and European troops.
The sides will reinforce supply chains for critical materials as well, creating an early warning mechanism for semiconductor supply chains.
But not all EU members are on the same page. France maintains a distance from U.S.-led foreign and security policies. The bloc has strong economic ties with China as well.
