Xi hungers for more power

Chinese President Xi Jinping has a magic wand he can wave to make things happen -- revising the Chinese Communist Party constitution.

The set of rules that binds its more than 96 million party members in turn guides the state called China. The basic principle is that the party comes first.

If any important changes are made to the party constitution, this is typically followed by an amendment to the national constitution -- as happened at the last national congress in 2017. A tweaking of the party constitution in October that year ultimately led to the revision of the national constitution the following March when the term limit for the Chinese president was abolished.

On Sept. 9, the Politburo agreed on revising the party constitution at the upcoming national congress to begin on Oct. 16. While the content of the revision has not been made public, it is highly likely to lead to some major changes next March.
