Japan to expand fuel and ammo storage on islands near Taiwan: defense chief

TOKYO -- Japan will bolster fuel and ammunition storage facilities on its southern islands closer to Taiwan as heightened cross-strait tensions and the Ukraine war force Tokyo to rethink its defensive strategy.

Japan to put an end to China's misadventures in the Nansei Islands by installing huge missiles Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada told Nikkei that the expansion will occur on the Nansei Islands in the East China Sea. Currently, 70% of ammunition is located more than 2,000 km away from a potential conflict around Taiwan.

The first step involves building a depot at a Ground Self-Defense Force camp on the island of Amami Oshima.

"We will radically strengthen the defense capabilities we need, including our capacity for sustained and flexible deployment," Hamada said.
