How Star Trek Makes People Do Strange Things

Canadians are paying a strange sort of tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy — they’re drawing his most famous character, Star Trek’s Spock, over a 19th-century politician on their banknotes.

Nimoy died on 27 February, and got a variety of tributes, not least from President Barack Obama. But few are weirder than the drawings of Spock on Canadian banknotes. It has become known as “Spocking.” 

It looks like the fad goes back further. Apparently, Canadians have been turning Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the country’s first French-speaking prime minister, into a Vulcan for years.
But the Bank of Canada is unimpressed.

According to the BBC, Canada’s central bank, which is responsible for the notes, confirmed that the practice isn’t illegal, but that people shouldn’t be doing it anyway:

“The Bank of Canada feels that writing and markings on bank notes are inappropriate as they are a symbol of our country and a source of national pride,” Menard told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in an email.

The spokeswoman also said disfigured bills may not circulate for as long and risk being rejected by retailers.

Some other countries have been trying to get in on the act, but Laurier makes a much better Spock than most banknote heads.

Nimoy played science officer Mr. Spock in the Star Trek series that served as an inspiration to generations of scientists, engineers and sci-fi fans around the world.

在韩剧《Hotel King》第三集中，中国酒店大佬王力钦出现在男女主人公服务的酒店，此人一身暴发户的装扮，浑身上下是名牌，穿着豹纹裤，金项链一次带俩，显示富贵身份 的戒指带了四、五个，一下车他就一副傲慢的神情，抱怨旅途不舒服，抱怨酒店员工不热情。到了酒店后，当主管不小心把酒撒到他裤子上的时候，他 更是勃然大怒，一口东北口音：“唉呀妈呀，我这是名牌呀，你干啥呀。”说着，还推了对方一把，一副流氓相。《Hotel King》将中国人刻画成这样，让不少中国观众看了都不太舒服。

The US Navy’s Real-Life Captain Kirk Got An Awesome Letter From William Shatner

The captain and crew of the futuristic USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) received an awesome letter from actor William Shatner prior to the ship’s christening on Saturday.


The ship, which will be the most technologically-advanced destroyer in the Navy when it becomes operational, is commanded by a real-life Capt. James Kirk. And while he’s of no relation to the fictional Capt. Kirk played by William Shatner in “Star Trek,” many have had fun with that coincidence.

That included Shatner himself, as a photo tweeted by Barbara Zumwalt yesterday showed the framed photo and letter he sent to the sailors who will soon be onboard, which is currently on display at Bath Iron Works in Maine.

“Unfortunately I can’t be with you when your vessel is commissioned and obviously your captain, Captain Kirk, is dear to my heart,” Shatner wrote. “So forgive me for not attending, my schedule won’t allow me, but know that you are in our thoughts — Mr. & Mrs. Shatner — and that we bless you and hope that you have a safe journey wherever your ship takes you.”

Doctor Who fans have praised the show's 50th anniversary episode as "epic" and "phenomenal".

The Day of the Doctor was broadcast in 94 countries at the same time as it aired on BBC One on Saturday night.

Featuring three Doctors - Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt - it delved deep into the character's psyche over 75 minutes.
There were also cameos from former star Tom Baker, and Peter Capaldi, who replaces Smith later this year.

"It's the most ambitious episode we've ever done," said the show's boss, Steven Moffat, ahead of the premiere.

Opening with the show's original credit sequence from 1963, the special featured the Daleks and the return of shape-shifting aliens the Zygons, who first appeared in 1975.

But the principal villain was potentially the Doctor himself.
Moffat's story played with the idea, introduced when the science-fiction show re-launched in 2005, that the Doctor was the "last of the Time Lords".

It transpired that Hurt's version of the Doctor had taken the decision to commit mass genocide in order to halt a "Great Time War" - and the 75-minute episode saw him fighting to come to terms with that decision, aided by two future versions of himself.

"The last few minutes affected me quite deeply," wrote Neil Perryman on the Guardian's website.

He conceded that some of the details "didn't make a lot of sense on first viewing" but added: "I don't care - I'll be watching it again this evening".

Speaking immediately after the show ended, star Matt Smith said: "I think what's really clever about it is that what he [Moffat] has managed to do is change the mythology of the character - which, after 50 years, is an achievement."

Aside from the emotional drama, the episode was filled with comedic moments - including a proposal, a marriage and "a machine that goes ding".

When Hurt's Doctor met his frenetic, childlike future selves, he asked: "Am I having a mid-life crisis?"

The show was also crammed with special effects, leaping from modern London to the planet of Gallifrey and Elizabethan England.
"I don't think it bears any resemblance to what we were doing," said Carole Ann Ford, who starred in the very first episode 50 years ago.

Doctor Who fans give their reactions to the anniversary show

Screened in 3D in more than 1,500 cinemas in 94 countries - from Russia to Ecuador - the episode attracted hundreds of fans in fancy dress, from bow ties to Dalek outfits.

A gala screening at the BFI in London was attended by Smith, Hurt, Moffat and their co-star Jenna Coleman. 

A huge cheer echoed around the cinema as the end credits rolled, while Tom Baker's surprise cameo also received a large round of applause.

The reaction on Twitter was similarly ecstatic.

Karl Purdon wrote: "That was simply phenomenal", while Freema Agyeman, who once played Martha Jones in the series, called it both "epic" and "compelling".

Moffat said the special episode had been partly conceived as a way to explain the gap in the series' history - from its cancellation in 1989, until the re-launch, under Russell T Davies, in 2005.
"I knew I wanted to make it about the Time War, and I wanted that 16-year gap to mean something," he said.

"There was a whole other Doctor we got conned out of".

'Emotional wallop'
 
Speaking before the broadcast, Moffat - the show's lead writer and executive producer - admitted he was "nervous" about the scale of the special.

"I'm glad we don't do it every time, but it's very exciting to do it once," he told the BBC News website.

He said he hoped fans would be "very happy", adding: "It's got a big emotional wallop at the end".

Moffat described the first ever Doctor Who episode, An Unearthly Child, broadcast on 23 November 1963, as "one of the very best episodes of Doctor Who ever made".

"All the ideas come from there," he said.

"The music, the name, the Tardis, the police box bigger on the inside... in terms of brand new ideas that's a rollercoaster of 25 minutes."

Moffat, along with Matt Smith and Jenna Colman, attended the official Doctor Who anniversary celebration at London's ExCel on Friday.

The three-day event, which is being attended by 8,000 fans a day, features appearances from Doctor Who stars from all eras of the series.

American Richard LeCour said he made a special trip from his home in California because Doctor Who had been "part of my life for 40 years".

Adam Highway, from Brighton, predicted that Doctor Who still had a long future ahead of it.

"It'll go on as long as it keeps that balance of appealing to people who don't know the history, but respects the history for those who give a damn about it," he said.

"I think Steven Moffat's got it spot on."

The anniversary story was Matt Smith's penultimate outing, before he regenerates at Christmas into a new Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi.

Now there’s a few ways to go about it, but I’ve compiled a list of what AMC’s The Walking Dead has taught us about surviving. Because, clearly, life or death decisions should always be based on popular television shows!

1. “Don’t have sex. Because you will get pregnant. And die.”

Too soon? But in all seriousness, if we learned anything from Lori it was that unplanned pregnancies during the zombie apocalypse is probably not such a good idea. Even though we’re already attached to little ass kicker, there’s a time a place for everything.

2. Don’t be a jerk.

Yes, I’m looking at you Merle. Now we all have a love/hate relationship with Merle, but he got extremely lucky getting rescued on that roof, and realistically he should’ve croaked. I’ll admit, he looks pretty cool kicking ass with a stump of a hand, but it could have all been avoided if he just minded his manners.

3. Kill all the walkers, even the ones you used to know

Or if you can’t, at least have someone else do it. It’s like keeping around a rotting sandwich. Just because you loved it when it was fresh, it doesn’t mean that you should keep it around. It may seem a little crude, but there is no time for hesitation when you’re fighting for your life.

4. Disregard number three if you’re Michonne.

That being said, if you’re clever enough to turn your walkers into pets, you’re doing it right. If they’re sans arms and jaws, you not only have walker repellant, but a few companions! However, you have to be willing to butcher them, and if you’re not able to put a bullet or knife through their head, this may be a little too extreme for you. Again, you can’t hesitate!

5. Silent weapons for walkers, guns for humans.

If there’s more walkers than humans left, it makes more sense to save your ammo for your armed living enemies. Remember, walkers are fairly stupid and humans are fairly less stupid. In a situation where walkers outnumber humans, you’re going to need a weapon with infinite ammo that reloads itself, such as a knife, sword, spear, etc. How many times did someone kick the bucket for running out of ammo?

6. Be Daryl Dixon.

Or at least team up with someone like him. He’s skilled at using just about every weapon; crossbow, knives, rocks, axes, guns, etc. He got lost in a forest when he was a kid, so he knows how to take advantage of his surroundings to survive outdoors. He genuinely cares about his group, everyone remember how he almost died while looking for Sophia? And overall, he’s just a cool character.

7. Stick together.

Not only should it, hopefully, prevent you from going insane due to extreme isolation (cough cough Morgan,) but you also have people watching your back. If you do start going crazy, Rick, at least you have some people around to make sure you don’t do something dangerous. And if desperate times call for desperate measures, you can use one of your people as walker bait, a la Shane. However, that’s a total dick move and you have to be prepared for feeling extremely guilty for the remainder of your days. And don’t be an Andrea and choose the “D” over your friend who rescued you while you were on the verge of death, that’s like basic girl code.


When it comes down to it, everyone will die in a zombie apocalypse. But if you’re determined to prolong your life for as long as possible, equal parts common sense and badass-ness is the way to do it.

Capt. James Kirk Tapped To Skipper Navy's Most Futuristic Ship Yet

Get ready for this: the skipper of the newest, most futuristic ship the U.S. Navy has ever built is none other than Capt. James Kirk.

Let that settle in for a second.

Almost a full 50 years from the birth of the fictional Capt. James T. Kirk in 1966, the real Capt. James A. Kirk (no relation) is taking the helm of the USS Zumwalt, reports Dylan Stableford of Yahoo News.

Kirk, a native of Bethesda, Md., was commissioned at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1990 and has served in a variety posts as a "surface warfare officer," according to his online bio. "Ashore, Captain Kirk has served as Executive Assistant to the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs and as an Action Officer on the Joint Staff."

Kirk obtained a master's degrees in national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College and U.S. Army War College, where he undoubtedly heard more than his share of "Star Trek" jokes.

The similarities between the two end at the name.

James T.'s ship was named the Enterprise. James A.'s the Zumwalt. T.'s was for exploration and humanitarian missions, A.'s primarily for combat and area denial.

The Zumwalt is the Navy's biggest destroyer and stands as the tip of the spear in Naval offensive operations. Its technology allows it to mitigate minefields, target submarines, and assault shores with a barrage of low altitude radar-evading missiles, artillery guns, and one day maybe even a magnetic railgun (no joke).

Its "tumblehome" tilted hull allows for a swift, quiet cut through the sea along with radar evasion. As if that weren't enough, it's the only destroyer that's completely electric (the Tesla of naval combat).

Finally, unlike the USS Enterprise, it looks cool.

Oprah Winfrey 'was victim of racism' in Switzerland

US talk show host Oprah Winfrey says she was the victim of racism during a recent visit to Switzerland.
She said an assistant refused to serve her in an upmarket handbag shop in Zurich.
Winfrey, one of the world's richest women, was apparently told the bags on display were "too expensive" for her.
Her claims, made to a US television program, come amid a political row over plans by some Swiss towns to ban asylum-seekers from some public places.
The BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Berne says human rights groups have likened the plans - which include banning asylum-seekers from swimming pools, playing fields and libraries - to apartheid.
Winfrey, who stars in Lee Daniels' new film The Butler, visited Zurich last month to attend singer Tina Turner's wedding. The Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Switzerland.
Winfrey said she left the shop calmly without arguing, but that the experience was proof that racism continues to be a problem.
"There's two different ways to handle it," she said.
"I could've had the whole blow-up thing... but it still exists, of course it does."
Her claims are a public relations disaster for Switzerland, our correspondent says.
About 48,000 people are currently seeking asylum in Switzerland. It has twice as many asylum seekers as the European average.
Officials say the curbs, which will also see asylum-seekers housed in special centres, are aimed at preventing tensions with residents.
The country's asylum laws were tightened in June.

I am a fan of her TV series "All In The Family" produced by Norman Lear. Most probably the very first political/social tv series that I ever follow and got influenced by it during my formation years in the early 70's. I think the single most vital item that got me interested in this show was its theme song where Archie Bunker and Edith sat in front of the piano and sang it out. Geng !!!!

By now news of Merle Dixon's death on the show The Walking Dead has hit the entertainment air waves.

Surely he will be missed.

Lacking, however, in the coverage is a breakdown of just how Merle died: saturated in whiskey, blasting rock and roll, in a totally awesome shoot-out.

It's the shoot-out in particular that has the attention of this post. (Prior to the breakdown though, we should note that Merle literally had a knife-hand — which undoubtedly puts him in a special place for any Marine.)

Okay, here's the breakdown:

Distraction and diversion: Merle uses American rock and roll to attract the attention of several zombies to an old Cadillac. Then driving, and dragging this horde behind him, he ditches his still-rolling vehicle as it enters the enemy position.

Flanking: Merle then dodges into an abandoned building that's off to the flank of the enemy. When the group of bad guys steps up to take out the zombies, Merle is in the perfect place to engage.

One shot, one kill: This is no time to go all Rambo, Merle is outnumbered and outgunned. So instead of wildly shooting at groups of people, he picks a target, lines up the shot, and squeezes the trigger.

Auditory cover: As Merle shoots the baddies, he lines up his rifle reports to coincide with the sounds of the enemy's own gunfire. This way, Merle can drop a fair amount of them before they catch on that they're being picked off.

Now, we all know that in the end, Merle eats it (literally as well, his brother later finds him zombified and chewing on a carcass), but everyone knows that in the Zombie Apocalypse it's not if you die, it's just how many zombies and bad guys you can take before you go.

In that regard, Merle will likely remain top dog for a while.

名为“豆福花”的短片，一开始描述一对男女因一碗豆腐花，缔 结情缘携手共结连理。

岁月匆匆流逝，转眼间他们的家境在努力工作下逐渐获得改善， 孩子也慢慢长大了。他们从骑脚踏车卖豆腐花开始，然后有了自己的摩托车、小罗里，最后也开了属于他们的一家“豆福花”店。

Norman Felton, the British-born producer of US TV shows The Man From Uncle and Dr Kildare has died aged 99.
According to trade newspaper, Variety, Felton died of natural causes in Santa Barbara, California on 25 June.
He co-created the spy thriller with Sam Rolfe, after initially developing the idea with 007 author Ian Fleming.
In 1965, he won a Golden Globe for the show and received an Emmy nomination the following year. He leaves a daughter and son and two grandchildren.
Born in London in 1913 to a lithographer and a cleaning lady, Felton's family emigrated to the United States in 1929 and settled in Ohio.
He attended the University of Iowa, earning his bachelor's degree and a masters in Theatre Arts in 1941.
Felton began his career in community theatre before moving to radio production and then TV production in 1950 - winning an Emmy for directing an episode of Robert Montgomery Presents.
In 1964, the first episode of The Man From Uncle was screened - it broke television boundaries pairing an American spy, played by Robert Vaughn, with a Russian agent - Scots actor David McCallum's Illya Kuryakin, at the height of the cold war.
The show ran for more than 100 episodes, until 1968.
Felton's other major TV success was medical drama Dr Kildare, which made a household name of Richard Chamberlain as the dashing young medic.
Felton continued to work as a producer through the 1970s, working with a diverse range of talent including Sally Field, Leonard Nimoy, and Jimmy Stewart on the critically acclaimed legal drama Hawkins
In 1997, he was presented with an honourary membership of the Producers Guild of America.

Dr. Who Returns !!!!

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious and eccentric time lord known as the Doctor who travels through time and space in his time machine, the TARDIS (an acronym for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space), which normally appears from the exterior to be a blue 1950s British police box. With his companions, he explores time and space, faces a variety of foes and saves civilizations, helping people and righting wrongs.

The programme is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television show in the world, and as the "most successful" science fiction series of all time

New Doctor Who  series opener watched by 6.5m

The Impossible Astronaut was followed by a tribute to late Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen on CBBC

The first episode in the new series of Doctor Who was watched by an average audience of 6.5 million viewers, according to overnight viewing figures.
On a sunny day in parts of the UK, that was down from the eight million recorded by overnight figures on Matt Smith's show debut in April 2010.
The Impossible Astronaut had an average audience share of 36.7%. Figures peaked at seven million.
The episode featured aliens partly inspired by Edvard Munch's The Scream.
BBC One viewers watched as Smith's Doctor was reunited with Karen Gillan's Amy Pond, Arthur Darvill's Rory Williams and Alex Kingston's River Song in 1960s America.
While final consolidated viewing figures - which include playback on recording devices - will push ratings higher, The Impossible Astronaut is likely to be the least watched series opener since Doctor Who was relaunched in 2005.
The new episode was described by the Daily Telegraph as a "wordy episode which concentrated more on atmosphere than pace and visual thrills".

Thanks, in part to "fizzing dialogue" and "a great concept" for a new monster, it was "a cracking start" to the new series, the paper added.
The Los Angeles Times, reviewing the programme because it is shown on BBC America, said Smith had "screwed into this role good and tight", praising his Doctor as "an ancient child, an unstable mix of authority and impulsiveness".
But Kevin O'Sullivan, writing in the Sunday Mirror, said the episode was called The Impossible Astronaut because it was "impossible to understand" complaining that "this ball of all-round confusion was no way to start a series".
The episode had been written for "strictly sci-fi nerds only", he added.

Saturday's episode began with a dedication to the memory of the late Doctor Who actress Elisabeth Sladen who died of cancer this week at the age of 63.
The actress also appeared in four series of spin-off show The Sarah Jane Adventures on children's channel CBBC, which began in 2007.
At the end of the The Impossible Astronaut, a tribute to Sladen - who starred opposite Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker as the Doctor's assistant between 1973 and 1976 - was screened on CBBC.
Saturday night's tribute featured Smith as well as his Doctor Who predecessor David Tennant.
