Five Eyes intelligence group to meet in Japan for 1st time
TOKYO -- The Five Eyes intelligence-sharing framework of the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada and New Zealand, is meeting in Japan for the first time on Wednesday. Holding this secretive gathering in the unusual setting of a nonmember country reflects Japan's growing importance as an intelligence-collecting base in the Indo-Pacific region.
Some countries are establishing an intelligence presence in Japan as China is tightening control on information and keeping a close eye on spies. Gaining an understanding of North Korea is becoming critical as well, as Pyongyang deepens cooperation with Russia. Under these circumstances, some countries are placing intelligence bases in Japan.
This summer, Canada created a new position in its embassy in Japan with jurisdiction over the entire Indo-Pacific region.
