Rakuten to export low-cost 5G tech to German telecom
TOKYO -- Rakuten Group's decision to bet big on telecommunications appears to have paid off after the company announced a more than $2 billion deal to export 5G technology to a German wireless carrier on Wednesday. The ace up Rakuten's sleeve -- virtualized network technology -- was key to landing the deal with Germany's 1&1, a relative newcomer in the telecom industry.
The Japanese tech conglomerate's network is expected to reduce maintenance and operation costs by approximately 40%. This technology is not only crucial for its domestic network but also will play a major role in generating revenue overseas.
