China sanctions inspire push for Japan's own Magnitsky Act
TOKYO
-- A push to create legislation that will allow Japan to sanction
countries and individuals over human rights violations is gaining steam,
with a cross-party alliance set to draft a proposal as early as next
month.
Lawmakers are taking matters into their own hands,
frustrated that the government is not taking action. The government
wants to avoid a full-blown dispute with Japan's largest trading partner
and lacks information regarding the Uyghur issue.
The move
comes after the U.S., Canada and the U.K. joined the European Union this
week in punishing Chinese officials over alleged abuses of its Uyghur
Muslim minority, leaving Japan as the only Group of Seven member not to
follow suit.
"The Japanese government has expressed alarm and
concern" over the Uyghur situation, but "it needs to take action," said
former Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, who co-leads the group crafting
the legislation.
