FIFA World Cup: Argentine fans wave Israeli flag, Malaysians call boycott
A group of Argentina supporters raised Israeli flags in the stands during Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Egypt, drawing immediate online backlash and triggering heated debate in Malaysia.
Egyptian fans in the stadium responded by waving Palestinian flags.
According
to social media posts circulating after the match, Argentina fans also
threw drink cans and rubbish at Egyptian supporters following the final
whistle, which ended in a draw.
Videos of the incident spread rapidly on Malaysian social media, where the imagery of Israeli and Palestinian flags at a World Cup venue resonated strongly, given the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Outrage, Pushback, And A Fried Chicken Ban
One user pushed back against attempts to link Messi personally to Israeli politics, noting that the Argentine captain had previously spoken out in defence of children in Gaza and that the Catholic Church — of which Messi is a member — regularly includes prayers for Palestine in Sunday services.
Others
criticised what they described as opportunistic framing by rival
football fans, while some called on FIFA to keep political symbols out
of the sport.
In a lighter vein, one post declared the referee officially “banned from entering Kedai Ayam Gepuk Malaysia” – a reference to the popular Indonesian fried chicken chain that has become a symbol of the pro-Palestine consumer movement in Malaysia after several Western fast-food brands faced boycott calls over perceived ties to Israel.
The implication: even fried chicken has standards.
The joke drew significantly more engagement than most of the serious commentary.
