Japan, U.S. to discuss sharing bases and ports at security talks
With an eye toward stepping up coordination in joint operations,
Japan and the U.S. are expected to discuss sharing bases, ports and
other facilities during peacetime at an upcoming meeting of top
diplomatic and defense officials.
The issue is among the top
agenda items at the "two-plus-two" security talks slated for Jan. 11,
two days before a bilateral summit in Washington. The meeting comes soon
after both countries revised their respective national security and
defense strategies.
Shared use of facilities in Japan is seen as essential for U.S. deterrence against China.
